Photo L FiggsI’m LaCharla Figgs, an organizational development consultant based in the Washington, DC-Baltimore region. After more than two decades of working in and with nonprofits, I’m still excited about their work.

I launched my own practice–now T.L Figgs Nonprofit Consulting–to help mission-driven agencies build strong plans, programs, and operations that serve people in need.

My mission is to partner with nonprofit leaders, helping them strengthen the leadership, programs, and operations of their mission-driven agencies. I do that through in-person and virtual classes, leadership coaching, consultation, meeting and process facilitation, and hands-on project support.

Most of my work has been with community-based and faith-based nonprofits. And I love the fact that they’re not waiting around for someone somewhere to change things. They MAKE the change they want to see. MY job is to make their job easier.

I worked in affordable housing and community development for more than 25 years, starting as the manager of a rent-subsidized apartment community in the southeast. From there I moved on to a Regional Development Commission, where I provided direct regulatory, project, and organizational assistance to city and county agencies.

National Capital Region
After moving to the DC area, I purchased houses and supported the Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit (MPDU) program for a local Public Housing Authority. Later, I landed a job in DC where I managed the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and provided technical program support to State CDBG directors in 48 states and Puerto Rico.

Working for a National Nonprofit
Next came 14 years at Enterprise Community Partners. Formerly The Enterprise Foundation, this national nonprofit’s mission is to create opportunity for low- and moderate-income people through affordable housing in diverse, thriving communities. My time there was a great learning experience. I went from managing $2+ million in government and private contracts, to providing direct assistance to nonprofits across the U.S. I ended my time there in the Baltimore office, having served as interim co-director and finally as deputy director and director of Housing and Community Development.

A New Adventure
Then in 2006, I put my experience to work in a new way, launching a consulting practice, offering advice, education, training, and hands-on help to community-based and faith-based nonprofits. And I’ve had the chance to take on interesting assignments like community outreach coordinator in for a DC healthcare initiative, program design and fundraising for an affordable rental community, and interim executive director of a transitional housing nonprofit.

As a consultant, I’ve worked for  community-based nonprofits and also for government and nonprofit agencies that support them. The list below provides a sample the kinds of work I performed:

  • Board of Director Workshops, Coaching, & Troubleshooting
  • Bylaws Review and Revision
  • Board Policy Review and Development
  • Board Resource Toolkit
  • Strategic Planning
  • Executive Coaching
  • Program Development (For Resident Services Operations)
  • Grant Proposal Writing
  • Workshops on Fundraising and Grantwriting
  • NeighborWorks
  • Nonprofit Start-Up Consultation and Hands-On Help
  • Interim Executive Staffing
  • Cash Flow Projections Workshop
  • Research and Report Writing
  • Community Outreach Coordination (Health Project)
  • Founding Executive Succession Planning

I’ve worked with government officials and nonprofit leaders, faith-based practitioners and residents of low-wealth communities. I’ve worked with board members and every-day folks interested in nonprofit startup. And I’ve run into many organizational challenges–from personality clashes and power struggles to the need for “mini re-engineering.” So if you want help launching a nonprofit or you want to learn how I can help your nonprofit reach its performance goals, use the links at the top or bottom to learn more about my training, coaching and consulting services.
